I've been traveling alone for years now, coming to Asia, moving all over the States to experience different cities and small towns, and travelling locally wherever I am to get a feel of the region. I can say, without a doubt, for every bad situation you get into as a traveler (vagabonding ftw!), there are twice as many good situations you can get into to balance them out. You just have to have an open mind, a positive and humble attitude, and be ALERT. Missing a good situation that could have enhanced your trip is indeed sayang but plenty will come along if you MAKE the environment friendly to them occurring. Who wants to converse with a scowling, distrustful, proud tourist?
